Finding a little joy
In the beginning one of the things that spurred my interest in photography forward was the joy and accomplishment I felt each time I added a sparkling new photograph to my portfolio. As the years went by, keeping an up to date portfolio became harder and harder. Especially when I started shooting for World Vision. I would come home with thousands of photographs and often feel overwhelmed with the task of sorting out the best ones. Recently as music has become more and more a part of my life I’ve suddenly found that joy again… collecting each song we record and putting it in a special place. With this inspiration I decided to take a stab at revamping my portfolio with the simple direction of picking images that stir up some joy in my chest. First up, a selection of My Hometown, Your Hometown, next — a selection of my favourite portraits that I’ve taken here in Toronto, and lastly you’ll find a selection of some of the most meaningful photographs I’ve taken while on assignment overseas. So take a look and I hope that they bring you some joy too.
Tonight at the Smiling Buddha Bar - Dar F.M. spring vintage collection
I recently had the privilege of photographing three lovely friends. Kathryn, Dar and Emily posed in Dar’s latest vintage finds for her Dar. F.M. section of Little City. They’ll be up on the site soon but we wanted to give people attending Vox a chance to have their first pick. Come by and say hello!

A quick hello
I’m down at the Flash Forward Festival this week trying to absorb as much as I can. I am seriously impressed by the artists and the organizers. I feel all giddy - like there is a million things I want to try out and change. One thing is to start working on a serious site update. So far I’ve updated the featured and portrait sections of my portfolio with recent work that I am really proud of. Hope you enjoy!
I took these shot in Mexico City when I was there early this year taking photos for a feature in Childview magazine.
When we decided we could do anything we wanted
One of my photos of Dar is going to used in the promotion of the Magenta Foundation’s Flash Forward Festival on Astral Media outdoor columns. I’m excited and frankly kind of weepy (in that good way). How appropriate after all these years that a photo of my creative partner in crime is going to be plastered all over this God blessed city? Wearing what we like to call the comfort sweater no less!
Dar has always been willing to go out of her way to help me. I remember the day we took this photo clearly. It was freezing and she was sick. She came all the way to Brampton on the bus and as we drove back to my parent’s house my Mum pulled over to the side of the road and loaned us her scarf. When we were finished we went home, warmed up and ate burgers. There is something really heart-warming about the whole thing.
Oh! And it’s in En Route magazine too! (Thanks Sarita for the heads up and Stevie for the photo!) See you all at the festival.
In the Mountains
As many of you already know Emily and I are in Mexico City collecting photos and words for World Vision’s magazine Childview. I have to run (back to those mountains) but here is a quick video of Emily sitting in the rain outside of the World Vision office in the suburbs of Mexico.
Much love,
Lys

A Year In Pictures - 2009
Once a friend of mine told me that when she was finished a year long internship she was advised to write down the names of the people she had met. Her list was long and when read reflected a wealth of experiences good and bad. This past year I have travelled over 4 continents. I’ve met and photographed hundreds of people. I wish I could show you all of their faces and sit and talk about what each of them taught me, how they showed me extravagant love. That not being possible here is an offering of some of my favourite photos that I’ve taken this year.
Also in honour of the coming year a spiffy new Alyssa Bistonath Photography page on Facebook! Check it out here.
