Flash Forward update

Well, I loved the Magenta Foundation’s Flash Forward Festival. I guess it’s no surprise that after listening to people talk about their love for the medium of photography and narrative that I am bursting with ideas… so much so that I went out and bought another (gigantic) sourcebook. Above left you’ll see Ryan Enn Hughes (who is a talented image maker) standing next to a shipping container in Liberty village with one of my photographs on it. On the right is one of the Astral media columns that I mentioned earlier.

So thanks again Magenta! Can’t wait until next time.

Tonight at the Tranzac - My Hometown, Your Hometown

lorine shoes on grace street

I’m excited to announce that tonight at the Tranzac here in Toronto I’ll be showing 10 pieces from the series My Hometown, Your Hometown. I hold this series very close to my heart and am so happy to share it with you. I was also very honoured earlier this year when the Magenta Foundation picked it to be part of this year’s Flash Forward.

Vox Toronto is going to match purchases on my prints with donations towards Pakistan relief and Toronto’s Habitat for Humanity. So come and hang out, listen to some music and learn about relief work happening in and through our community.

The Untold Stories at the Contact Photo Festival

Well friends, it’s been a long road - but today’s the day! I’m so happy to announce that the Untold Stories is opening tonight at the University of Toronto. The show exhibits photographs taken by myself and two of my fellow photographers at World Vision: Paul Bettings and Andrew Goodwin. We’ve selected photographs and stories that you typically would not see in World Vision media - particularly stories of people who have made a lasting impression on each of us during our travels.

I hope that you’ll join us tonight from 7PM-10PM to learn about the world that we have seen and the work that we do. There will be a Q&A at 9PM.  If you can’t make it out tonight be sure to check it out during the month of May.

The Hope Moment

Every photographer wants people to see their photos.  In addition to this I hope that people will see my photos and feel an inspired compassion.  So it’s very well a dream come true to exhibit my photos during World Vision’s Ottawa Campaign for Children.  If you are in the Ottawa area please join us this Thursday July 30th from 6pm-9pm at the Market Media Mall (the “A” Channel building) for an exhibition entitled The Hope Moment.  You’ll see 19 of my photos from Ethiopia, South Africa, Brazil and El Salvador.

Above you’ll see the invitation and an article that appeared in today’s 24 Hours (the Ottawa addition) about the exhibit.  You can click on them to see them larger.  You can also find the Facebook invite here.

Also! If you are in the Ottawa area I will be on “A” Morning at 9:40 am on Thursday.

FYI

Opening: April 3rd-10th: Our photograph, “I Know You So Well I Don’t Even Know You Anymore”  is still touring with the International Roaming Biennial of Tehran.  The show opens tonight in Belgrade.

Closing: April 8th: Pieces of Innocence moves on from T.A.N Cafe soon. If you haven’t seen it yet, get over there!  The exhibit is a selection of photographs by children we taught in Kenya last summer, and children we taught in Regent Park this past school year.

Announced: May 7th-31st: I’m excited to tell you that a selection from my series Restless/Unrest will be on display at the Norman Felix Gallery during the Contact Toronto Photography Festival

Announced: I have been selected as one of the Grand Prize winners in the Show Your Ontario contest for professional photographers!  Check out the above photograph and more of my images in the winners gallery.  A catalogue containing my photographs (and the photographs of my peers) will be released on June 18th.  The release will be in Toronto at the Lennox Contemporary and is complemented by a two-week-long exhibition.

Love Come Down!

I hope you’ll come out to the El Macambo tonight between 6pm and 10pm!  I’m showing two prints from my series Take Off Your Jacket Dreamer at an event called Love Come Down.  We are raising money for Sketch. (Sketch provides art programs for street-involved, homeless and at risk youth).

Let’s celebrate love in its truest form!
Bless,
Alyssa
