From my December 2010 trip.

Quiet city

On Saturday morning I woke up before then sun, laced up my steel toe boots, strapped my camera bag to my bike, and glided through the empty streets of our lovely city. The clouds only seemed present in order to make the rising sun more beautiful and the wind gently pushed me downtown as if it knew exactly where I was going. I usually photograph people, but this time my assignment involved photographing a building. It reminded me of my days with Eye Weekly when I would explore places that Shawn Micallef had detailed in Stroll. Every once in a while I would show up to a location and the mysteriousness of it would peak my curiosity. Time would fly by and the it seemed like the only sound in the world was my shutter opening and closing. All photographers are different, but for me little else is more satisfying.

Tonight at the Smiling Buddha Bar - Dar F.M. spring vintage collection

——

I recently had the privilege of photographing three lovely friends. Kathryn, Dar and Emily posed in Dar’s latest vintage finds for her Dar. F.M. section of Little City. They’ll be up on the site soon but we wanted to give people attending Vox a chance to have their first pick. Come by and say hello!

Make so much fun

We’re embarking on a new adventure over on Little City. One which required me to step out of my comfort zone a little and shoot some fashion shots. Above you’ll see my beautiful cousin Emily and my beautiful friend Sona who were kind enough to lend Dar and I an afternoon to be photographed.

Mali Dance Party

You know when kids are running towards something with DELIGHT on their faces that it’s going to be good.

I’m processing my photos from Mali and I thought I’d take a time out to share these photos with you. They bring me so much joy. We were filming in a rural village when we suddenly heard drumming. We arrived at the sound and we saw some traditional Malian dancing. The energy there was amazing. Truly fun to see some of the women with babies strapped to their backs getting some height on those jumps! And of course my favourite dancer - the elderly lady who showed the young folk a thing or two! Turns out there was a wedding celebration happening in the village - I’m so glad that I was there to see it.

Hard Hat Heaven for ROB (and a little bit of rock and roll)

Above you’ll see a shoot I did for the Report on Business last month right before I went to Mexico.  I was really excited to work on this project because it involved multiple environmental portraits shot with a tilt shift lens.  Usually I shoot landscapes this way and it was a fun challenge to add a person in - I’m definitely proud of the result.  It’s so nice when you’re hired to take photos that you would take anyways.  You can see the whole spread here and you can read the article here.

It feels like winter just whizzed by this year. None of the usual lazing around pasting things in my journal and shooting tons of creatives.  I shot a plenty of stills I love while in Mexico - and since I’ve been back I’ve been happy to let my camera be while I’ve been processing and captioning.  I’ve discovered over the years that it’s creatively constructive to take extended breaks from one medium and pour yourself into another. My spare time (which has been sparse) has been poured into drumming and making lovely music with neglected friends - it has been incredible fun.

So that’s it.  Goodbye winter! Stay tuned friends - the spring includes two exhibitions, a feature for World Vision’s magazine and a return trip to Mali.

Joined at the rib - Report on Business Magazine

I took this shot of Gerry Sheff (left) and Ira Gluskin a couple of weeks ago for the Globe and Mail’s Report on Business Magazine. Every photo shoot is an adventure. You go prepared and with an idea of what you want to capture—and then you go and make it happen. You meet the most fascinating people, and for a day or two, you get to glimpse their world. It’s always interesting to head down to the financial district and take a look around (though I have to remember to turn off my headphones in the echoey elevators and not rumple my crisp shirt).

You can find the full article here. And shout-outs to Clare Jordan for the gig—amazing fun.
