when we remember,
these days
we’ll exclaim,
“how beautiful!
when we were young and together
with coffee and confusion,
with cold air and harmony ,
with bravery and held breathe,
we held each other up.”
I took this photograph through the window of a train while on my way to visit my family. I love the idea of taking a train to see family. It sounds reminiscent, it’s comforting, and when I saw this Weston factory I started to ache for the past, the present, and the future all at the same time. It seems certain to me that this landscape has changed little in the past 25 years, it remains timeless. Yet by comparison it was a shaking reminder that I have most obviously changed in the same amount of time. Changes supported by the bravery and harmony of my friends and family.
The relationship between time, memory and the image derives a notion that a modern photograph and a digital technology can be combined to make an image that is reminiscent of our past feelings and artistic tools. The question many ask is, “Why don’t you just use a film camera if you want it to look like film?” The answer, we are human beings in need of new methods to observe the dignity of our past while at the same time exploring the freedom and limitless potential of our future.
